Tässä on Laban. Laban saapui luokseni Tanskasta, ja viimeisen kuukauden olemme opetelleet tuntemaan toisemme. Ystävystyminen on ollut oikein hauskaa - Laban on erittäin hienotunteinen ja mukava vieras. Päivät hän viettää ottaen torkkuja keltaisessa nojatuolissani ja lueskellen, vaikka kirjahyllystäni löytyy kuulemma harmillisen vähän koira-aiheista kirjallisuutta. Laban on kuitenkin hyvillään siitä, että asun lähellä puistoa jossa käy paljon koiria. Pidämme molemmat paljon hyvästä kahvista, ja luulen, että meillä tulee olemaan hauskaa kun esittelen Labanille Helsingin kahviloita! (Laban juo mielellään espresson iltapäivisin, minä taas pidän enemmän cappucinosta.)
This is Laban. He arrived from Denmark a month ago and we`ve been getting to know each other since. I can tell you it`s been a pleasure! He`s a very amiable character and doesn`t make much noise. In the afternoon while I`m at work he usually naps in my yellow armchair or maybe reads a little - though he thinks I have too little dog-related literature in my bookshelf. The small park near me is visited by a lot of dogs, which pleases Laban immensely. Just like me, Laban loves a decent cup of coffee. We`ll have lots of fun checking out the cafes in Helsinki! (Laban enjoys an espresso in the afternoon, while I prefer cappucino.)
Koti-ikävä vaivasi Labania - hän kaipaa tanskalaisia makkaroita - joten ilahduttaakseni häntä vein hänet tämänhetkiseen suosikkikahvila/baariini smoothielle. Makkaroita sieltä ei tosin saanut.
Laban was feeling a little homesick - he says he misses Danish pölser* - so to cheer him up I took him for a smoothie to my favourite (at the moment) cafe/bar (link in Finnish, but with some photos - I love the pink/green combo). No pölser there, though.

Jokin aika sitten sovimme vaihdosta Kristinan kanssa, ja minä sain Labanin, joka on juuri niin ihana kuin Kristinan neulomat koirat valokuvissa! Labanin mukana saapuivat Kristinan tekemät kortit. Tuntuu uskomattomalta, että Kristina näki kaiken kiireensä keskellä näin paljon vaivaa, minä kun vain lähetin pari Muumi-astiapyyhettä ja vähän muuta Muumitavaraa. Kristinan blogista näkee, mitä pyyhkeistä ym. on tullut - on jännittävää nähdä lähettämäni paketin sisältö ihan uudenlaisena!
A while ago I agreed on a little swap with Kristina, and I got Laban, who`s every bit as wonderful as her knitted dogs look like in the photos! Together with him came the two lovely cards below. It`s too much, really - all I did was send some Moomin dishtowels and some other Moomin stuff (have a look at all the great things she`s made out of them - it`s so exciting to see it!). I feel spoiled. Thank you so much, Kristina!
Kummipoikani, siskoni poika pikku A vietti ensimmäistä syntymäpäiväänsä perjantaina. A ei olekaan enää vauva - hän tuntuu kasvavan niiin nopeasti, varsinkin opittuaan kävelemään (tai paremminkin juoksemaan). On kuin A olisi ollut olemassa paljon pidempään kuin vuoden, on vaikea muistaa millaista oli ennen kuin tapasin hänet ensimmäisen kerran vajaan vuorokauden ikäisenä. Olen onnekas kun olen voinut viettää paljon aikaa A:n kanssa ja tutustua häneen kunnolla jo vauvaiässä - toivottavasti siihen on jatkossakin mahdollisuus.
Little A, my nephew, had his first birthday on Friday. Not a baby anymore. He seems to be growing up so fast, especially now when he`s suddenly started walking (or running, more like it). It also feels like he`s been around forever, it`s hard to remember how things were before he was born. I`m really happy for having been able to spend a lot of time with A and bonding with him, and hopefully I`ll continue doing that.
Tiedän, että kolme lahjaa yksivuotiaalla on ehkä vähän liioittelua. Mutta minusta poikaa voi hemmotella nyt, kun hän on liian pieni ymmärtämään, että häntä hemmotellaan. Yksi lahjoistani oli ostettu, Zdenek Milerin Myyrän housut -kirja. Rakastin myyrää lapsena (ja vieläkin) ja on hauskaa, että myyräkirjoja, dvd-levyjä ja muuta tavaraa on saatavana. (Arvaa, mitä saat lahjaksi tulevaisuudessa A!)
Now I know three presents might seem a bit much for a 1-year-old. But I think it`s okay to spoil A a little when he`s still too young to know he`s being spoiled. One of my presents was bought: one of Zdenek Miler`s Mole books. I loved the Mole as a child, in fact I still do! It`s great they sell books, dvd`s and other Mole stuff again. (Guess what you`ll be getting in the future, A?)
Tuunasin pari H&M:n bodya kontaktimuovisapluunoiden avulla. Keltainen valasbody on suosikkini - en välitä khakin vihreästä, mutta bodyt myytiin yhdessä (oli muuten vaikeaa löytää niitä ilman kuviota/printtiä). Vihreä dinobody sopii kuitenkin toiseen lahjaan:
I customized some onesies from H&M by stenciling a whale and a dino on them - I like the one with whale better. Khaki green isn`t my favourite, but the onesies were sold together (and it wasn`t easy finding ones without pattern/print). And the green one goes with another present:
Dinosaurus saattaa näyttää hiukan uhkaavalta, mutta ei syytä huoleen: se on stegosaurus, kasvinsyöjä ja oikeastaan aika lempeä. Sillä on siniset silmät (ainoa sopivanvärinen lanka varastossani) ja kukikas vatsa, niin kuin vikasta kuvasta näkyy. Jalat ovat toiselta puolelta ruutukangasta ja ne liikkuvat. Tein 'nappinivelet', ilman nappeja tosin, jotta lelu olisi turvallinen. Mitähän 'button joints' on suomeksi? Kuvatessa ei ollut paljoa valoa, kuvien laatu ei ole paras mahdollinen...
Don`t be afraid! He might look a bit menacing, but he`s a stegosaurus. Meaning he`s a vegetarian and quite gentle. He`s got blue eyes (the only suitable colour I had), flowers on his belly, and green and white gingham on the other side of his legs, as you can see in the last photo. You can move his legs, since I made button joints. Without the buttons though, since I wanted him to be as toddler friendly as possible. Sorry, I didn`t have much light while taking the photos.
Halusin tehdä dinosauruksen luettuani Kristinan tämän postin. Lentolisko, jonka Kristina on tehnyt yhteistyössä poikansa kanssa, on HIENO! (Ja on hauskaa, että se on äidin ja pojan yhteistyön tulosta.) Kristina esitteli myös ostamansa dinosauruskaavan. Minulla ei aikaa etsiä kaavaa, joten piirsin sen itse.
Ottaen huomioon sen, etten ole koskaan tehnyt minkäänlaista pehmolelua*, kaavasta tai ilman, dinosta tuli mielestäni ihan hyvä. Jos minulla olisi ollut enemmän aikaa ompelemiseen (ks. tämä posti), olisin varmaan muokannut vielä kaavaa ja tehnyt toisen version. Ehkä sitten myöhemmin, ehkä ei - haluaisin kokeilla muita pehmoleluja seuraavaksi. Täytyy viedä ompelukone pian huoltoon.
*Valehtelin - tein kerran kissan, mutta se oli niin yksinkertainen, ettei sitä lasketa.
I got inspired to make a dino softie from this post by Kristina. How cool is that flying dino she`s made in collaboration with her son?! Very cool. (And I love the fact they worked together on it.) Staring at her dino and the picture of the dino pattern, I knew I wanted to make one for little A. Only I didn`t have a pattern at hand, so I drew it myself. Considering I haven`t ever done a softie, neither with a pattern nor of my own design*, I think the stegosaurus turned out okay. If I`d had more time to sew it instead of one afternoon (see this post), I`d probably called it a beta version and tried to better the pattern. Maybe later. And maybe not - I`d like to try my hands on other softies next. Have to take that damned sewing machine to the repair soon.
*Oops, I lied - I made a cat once, but it was so simple it doesn`t count.
A:n mielestä hauskin lahja taisi kuitenkin olla lahjapaperi.
Being a toddler, A seemed to find the wrapping paper the best present of all.
Sain paljon mukavia lahjoja tänä jouluna, kuten söpön Pylones-termospullon, ihanaa hajuvettä, Tuutikki-mukin mukikokoelmaani ja Anna Kortelaisen kirjan Naisen tie - L. Onervan kapina. Käsityöaiheisia lahjoja oli yksi, nimittäin Fiskarsin ompelusakset - aiemmin en ole omistanut kunnollisia. Kotona odottaa vielä muutama paketti ystäviltä, mukavaa!
I got a lot of great presents this Christmas, including a cute thermos by Pylones, a bottle of perfume I love, a Tooticky mug for my Moomin mug collection and a book (about a Finnish author, L. Onerva, who was quite rebellious on her time). I also got small sharp scissors, which I really need for cutting threads and yarn. I still have a couple of packages from friends waiting at home - nice!
Muilla perheenjäsenillä ei ollut niin paljon onnea: tilasin kalenterin ottamistani valokuvista isille ajoissa, mutta (todennäköisesti jouluruuhkan takia) se ei saapunut ennen joulua Ifiltä. Sisko parka sai vain kortin jossa luvattiin huivi. Päätin neuloa siskolle huivin kuukausia sitten, mutta ensin en osannut päättää mallia ja/tai lankaa, ja sitten kävi hassusti, kun lankaa ei ollutkaan saatavilla tarpeeksi. Suunnitelmien muututtua ei enää ollut kylliksi aikaa (paitsi jos olisin neulonut 24 tuntia vuorokaudessa aattoon asti - ja olin muutenkin kyllin stressaantunut). Harmittaa siskon lahjattomuus, olemme läheisiä ja panostan aina hänen lahjaansa, haluan aina keksiä jotain erityistä. Ostamani lanka on luksuslankaa, ehkä se lohduttaa siskoa vähän sitten kun luovutan tekeillä olevan huivin hänelle.
The other members of my family were not so lucky: I`d ordered a calendar with photos taken by me for Dad, but (probably due to Christmas and all the orders) it didn`t arrive early enough, even though it should have. And poor sis got just a card with a promise of a scarf. Funnily enough, I decided to knit her a scarf months ago. But then I had some difficulties deciding the pattern and the yarn, and when I finally did, I couldn`t get enough of the yarn I wanted. After being compelled to change the plans, I just didn`t have enough time for knitting the scarf (or maybe I would have, if I´d knit day and night until Christmas Eve*, but I was stressed enough as it was). I feel real bad about this, sis and I are close and I like to put an extra effort for finding a perfect present for her. The yarn I´ve bought is luxury yarn, so I hope that`ll make her feel better when she finally gets the (now in the make) scarf.
Äiti sai kuitenkin Branching Out -huivin. Lanka on Butterflyta SNY-Tiinan elokuisesta paketista ja sopii minusta hyvin äidille. Väri on luonnossa kauniimpi, harmahtavan vihreä joka saa minut ajattelemaan hopeapajun lehtiä. Äiti kuuluu villa kutittaa -ihmisiin, joten puuvilla-viskoosisekoite on hyvä valinta: ei kutita ja sopii keväthuiviin.
Mum received her Branching Out though. The yarn came from my secret pal Tiina back in August and instantly thought it would suit Mum. The colour is more beautiful in reality: a greyish green, reminds me of the leaves of silver willow. Also, Mum`s one of those wool is itchy -persons, and this cotton/viscose blend won`t itch. It`ll make a perfect spring scarf.

Koska äiti ei käytä pitkiä huiveja eikä ole kovin pitkä itsekään, tein huivista aika lyhyen, n. 60 mm. Mietin, onko se liian lyhyt, mutta äidin neulomat kaulaliinat ovat yleensä samaa pituutta. Käytin Elizabeth Zimmermanin päättelyä (onkohan tälle joku muukin nimi?) jotta päättelykerros muistuttaisi luomiskerrosta.
Huivia oli kiva neuloa kun opin mallineuleen. Malli on kyllä vaikeampi kuinkuvittelin, sen sanotaan kuitenkin sopivan aiemmin pitsiä neulomattomille. Tosi nätti mallineule, voisin neuloa toisenkin niin kauan kun mallikerta on jotenkin muistissa.
As Mum isn`t one to use long scarves (and isn`t very tall) I made the scarf quite short, about 60 cm. I wondered if it`s too short, but the scarves Mum usually knits herself aren`t much longer. I used Elizabeth Zimmerman`s bind off so the bo round resembles the co round. Knitting this was fun once I got a hang of the pattern; it`s not as easy as I thought it would be, considering it`s recommended for novice lace knitters. And it`s really pretty, I think I´d like to make another as long as I still remember the pattern.

Saan luultavasti neuloa vielä nelinkertaisen määrän samaa mallikertaa. Seuraaviin päiviin kuuluu siis luultavasti paljon telkkarin katselua. Mutta ehkä vähän vähemmän herkkujen syömistä.
I think I`ll have to knit four times as much in the same pattern. So the next days will probably include more telly-watching for me. But maybe a bit less eating.
Vaikka tänä vuonna luulin aloittaneeni lahjojen tekemisen ajoissa, olen joutunut vähentämään itsetehtyjen lahjojen määrää joulun lähestyessä. Olen tosin enimmäkseen keksinyt vielä parempia lahjaideoita tilalle, joten en ole kamalan pettynyt. Lisäksi päätin olla stressaamatta lahjoista: lahjojen antaminen on minusta hauskaa, joten en halua pilata iloa hermoilemalla tekemättömien lahjojen määrästä. Matka vanhempien luo joulunviettoon estää sopivasti tekemästä viime hetkiin asti lahjoja (aina se ei ole estänyt, mutta tänä vuonna päätin olla laiska).
Although I got an early start with presents this year (or so did I think), I`ve had to cut back the amount of self-made gifts. I guess it`s ok - mostly I`ve found something even more suitable for the person in question. Plus I decided no matter what, I`m not going to get stressed. I really like giving gifts so I don`t want to spoil the fun by spending every minute before the holidays agonizing about un-sewn things. And as I want to get to my parents a few days before Christmas I really don`t have that many days left.
Yksi itsetehty lahja on jo päätynyt saajalleen, ja kuulin juuri, että paketti on avattu. L:n synttärit olivat 19. päivä, ja koska annoin vain yhden paketin, annoin L:lle luvan joko avata sen merkkipäivänä tai odottaa jouluun. Neuloin Fetching-kämmekkäät, kuten sovimme lokakuussa. Kämmekkäät valmistuivat kyllä jo melkein kaksi kuukautta sitten, mutta odottelin monta viikkoa sopivaa mielialaa lankojen päättelyyn (kuinka kauan siihen oikein voi mennä?!?) ja ennenkaikkea odotin, että saatavilla olisi yhtä aikaa sekä mannekiini että valoa kuvausta varten. Kuten kuvista näkyy, molemmat toiveet eivät toteutuneet yhtäaikaisesti... (Ja minulla sattui olemaan päällä mustaa tai valkoista - todella fiksua.)
One gift I`ve knit has already made it to it`s recipient, and I just heard it`s been opened too. L had her birthday December 19th, and since I gave only one present I told her she can choose whether to open it today or wait for Christmas. I knit her a pair of Fetching she requested back in October. I knit the mitts almost two months ago, but had to wait several weeks for the mood for weaving the ends in (how difficult can that be?) and, more importantly, having both light and someone modeling them. Unfortunately those things didn`t happen at the same time, as you can see from the photos... (And then I had to wear either black or white - how smart.)

L toivoi pidempää ranneosaa, joten neuloin palmikkomallikerran viisi kertaa kolmen sijaan. Neuloin myös muutaman kerroksen enemmän peukaloon ja ennen ylintä palmikkokerrosta. Omissa kämmekkäissä yläreunan rullautuminen on vähän ärsyttävää mutta ilmeisesti väistämätöntä* picot edge bind offin kanssa, joten päättelin sen sijaan ihan perinteisellä tavalla - picot edge bo on kyllä nätimpi.
L sanoo rakastavansa näitä, ja olen itsekin tyytyväinen. Lanka on pehmeää ja todella lämmintä. Palmikot toki näkyisivät paremmin vaaleammassa värissä, mutta mehukas punainen tekee kämmekkäistä vielä lämpimämmän oloiset.
*Halusin nähdä, miten muiden kämmekkäille on käynyt, ja googlettaessani löysin mm. Fetching Knit Along -blogin.
L asked me to make the cuff a bit longer for her, so I repeated the cable pattern for five times instead of only three. I also knit a couple more rows for the thumb and before knitting the top cable round. One thing that`s been mildly disturbing in my pair is the curling on the top, which seems to happen to every pair with the picot edge bind off*, so I did the regular bo instead. I think the picot bo looks better, though. L claims to love these, and I`m satisfied with them myself. The yarn is real warm and also nice and soft - of course you`d see the pattern better in a lighter shade, but the rich colour makes the mitts feel even more warm, I think.
*I googled to see what happened to other people`s mitts, and found Fetching KAL while at it.
L siis tiesi mitä paketissa oli, mutta yritin vähän hämätä antamalla kovan paketin pehmeän sijaan - tykkään pakata lahjat niin, ettei niistä heti arvaa sisältöä. Vähän enemmän jännitystä saajalle. Sitä paitsi nämä näyttivät ihan mansikkahillolta pakattuna lasipurkkiin.:)
Of course L knew what she was getting, but I had to try and confuse her by giving a hard parcel instead of a soft one - I like packing gifts in a way it`s not easy to guess what it is. Makes it more exciting, you know? Plus these really looked like jam once they were in a jar.
Tulin juuri kotiin Pähkinänsärkijä ja hiirikuningas -baletin esityksestä (uudistettu versio Pähkinänsärkijästä). WOW! Olen ollut todella stressaantunut pari päivää (en nuku, en syö, en tee edes sitä mitä pitäisi) tehdessäni asioita jotka pitäisi ehtiä tehdä ennen Helsingistä lähtöä, joten ehdin jo katua lupaustani lähteä J:n kanssa balettiin. Mutta tämä oli juuri sitä mitä tarvitsin! Menimme vähän ennen esityksen alkua kysymään noutamattomia varauksia, ja saimme hyvät permantopaikat 10 euroa per lippu. Kaksi tuntia ja 20 minuuttia satumaassa, ja stressini oli (melkein) kokonaan poissa. Ja olen leijaillut fantasiamaailmassa loppuillan.
Olen nähnyt Pähkinänsärkijän ennenkin, mutta se esitys (Petipan koreografia) oli todella erilainen kuin nyt näkemäni, Wayne Eaglingin ja Toer van Schaykin koreografia. Tykkäsin tästä kyllä hurjasti, ja lapsikatsojille oli varmaan mukavaa, että esityksessä tanssimassa paljon lapsia.
I just came home from a performance of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King (kind of updated version of The Nutcracker) and ...WOW! I`d regretted already for agreeing to go with J, since I was majorly stressed out for a couple of days (in a 'can`t sleep, can`t eat, can`t even do the things I should'-state) due to the amount of things to do before leaving Helsinki. But this was just what I needed! We went a little before the performance was to begin and asked for reserved-but-not-purchased -tickets, and got good seats for only 10 euros each. Two hours and 20 minutes of magical fairy-tale land later, my stress was (almost) completely gone, and I`ve been partly in a fantasy land the rest of the evening.
I`ve seen The Nutcracker before, but that performance (I think it was Petipa`s coreography) was quite different from this (coreography by Wayne Eagling and Toer van Schayk). I really loved this version too! There were many children performing in addition to adult dancers - that must be really nice for the kids in the audience to see.
Jos olet menossa syntymäpäiville lauantaina ja huomaat keskiviikkona, ettei sinulla ole lahjaa, mitä teet? Päätät tietenkin neuloa jotain päivänsankarille! ...Olisin ehkä tehtävästä, jos olisin ollut töissä vähemmän, huomannut aiemmin että ensin kokeilemani malli ei toimi ja/tai lanka ei olisi loppunut. (Onneksi minulla oli varasuunnitelma lahjan suhteen.)
When you`re going to a birthday party on Saturday and realize on Wednesday you haven`t got a gift yet, what do you do? Why, decide to knit something for the birthday girl, of course. Well, I might have made it if I`d had more knitting time and less work, noticed that the first pattern I tried didn`t work and/or hadn`t ran out of yarn. (Luckily I had plan B.)
Tein tämän hatun P:lle, jonka synttärit olivat jokin aika sitten. Hattu valmistui ja kuvattiinkin jokin aika sitten, ja on jopa lähetetty P:lle, mutta bloggaaminen on tietokoneettomuuden takia viivästynyt. Alun perin halusin tehdä bibon, mutta niin paljon kuin tykkäänkin mallista, se ei ole sopiva käyttämälleni langalle. Nurjat silmukat eivät tuo kimallusta kovin hyvin esille - langassa ON glitteriä, vaikkei se kuvista juuri näykään. Lisään kuvan langasta kun voin.*
I made this hat for my friend P, who had her birthday a while ago - the hat was also finished and photos were taken a while ago, and now the hat is even sent to her, but due to my lack of (working) computer I`m blogging it only now. Originally I wanted to use this pattern by Laura (scroll down), but pretty as it is, it didn`t seem to suit this yarn. All those purled stitches just don`t show off the glitter in the yarn - there is glitter, even though you can`t see it in the pics. I`ll post another photo of the yarn when I`ll be able.*
Lanka on vaaleanpunaista Sandnes Sisu Glitteriä, jonka ostin jo joskus alkuvuodesta, kun aioin virkata hatun samalle P:lle. Onneksi Menitasta löytyi vielä samaa värjäyserää, tosin jos en olisi joutunut heittämään pois pätkää, jonka ensin virkkasin ja sitten purin eikä ollut enää neulottavaa, olisin selvinnyt yhdellä kerällä. Nyt minulla on taas melkein kokonainen kerä lankalaatikossa, 44 g. Ei se mitään, koska minusta tuntuu, että tarvitsen itsekin vaaleanpunaista kimallusta - niin omituiselta kuin se tuntuukin.
The yarn is Sandnes Sisu Glitter in pink. I had yarn in my stash, bought earlier this year when I intented to crochet a hat for the same P (but for some reason never finished). Fortunately I found a skein in the same dye lot from my lys. Though if I hadn`t had to throw away a bit of the yarn I`d crocheted and frogged before, one skein would have been enough - now I have 44 grams left, almost a full skein. Never mind, because -shocking as it is- I might need a glittery pink hat myself.

Halusin käyttää juuri tätä lankaa, koska P pitää sekä vaaleanpunaisesta että glitteristä. Myös langan nimi sopii: 'sisu glitter' on P pähkinänkuoressa.
Kavennuksien suhteen olin epävarma, keksin ne neuloessani (muistattehan että olen aloittelija). Lopputulos on kuitenkin ihan hyvä, hattu istuu tarpeeksi napakasti muttei liian.
I wanted to use this yarn, because P likes both pink and glitter, and the name of the yarn suits her too: in Finnish, 'sisu' means something like having perseverance and guts, lots of. Combined with 'glitter', well, that`s P in a nutshell for you.
I wasn`t so sure about the decreases, which I just made up while knitting - I`m a knitting novice, remember? But they turned out ok: the hat is snug but not too snug, just as I wanted.
*Tietokonehuoleni ovat ohi (toivottavasti), koska isin ja äidin suosiollisen lainan ansiosta minulla on uusi läppäri (JIHUU!!!). Entinen tietokoneeni oli käytetty ja sillä oli monia ihmisen ymmärryksen ylittäviä inhottavia tapoja, joten on ihmeellistä, kun omistaa tietokoneen joka mm. käynnistyy heti kun painan käynnistymisnappia (huom. loistava tietokonesanaston hallinta!). Kuvat on vielä vanhan koneen kovalevyllä, ja osa siskon koneella, joten menee hetki ennen kuin saan lankakuvat.
*My computer woes are over now (hopefully), since I`ve had a brand new lap top for a few days (YAY!!!) - thanks for the loan, Mum and Dad. After hand-me-down computer which had many evil ways, none of them known to man, it`s like a dream to have one which e.g. actually starts the first time you push the button. My photos are still on the old computer`s hard drive, and some on sis`computer, so it`ll take a while since I´ll be able to post the yarn photo.
